Former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has claimed a lack of faith from his Stamford Bridge teammates drove him ‘crazy’ during his ill-fated spell in West London following a big-money switch from Real Madrid.
The Spaniard moved from Los Blancos for £57m in July 2017 but endured a torrid time at Stamford Bridge, netting just 24 goals in 72 appearances for the Blues.
Arriving to much fanfare having also turned out for Juventus during his career, Morata failed to demonstrate his best form in the Premier League, struggling to adapt to the physical nature of the division and ultimately losing his place in the starting eleven.
In what was undoubtedly a difficult spell in England, Morata has since revealed it wasn’t only the Chelsea fans who were not impressed by his ability, but indeed his teammates as well.
“It wasn’t a good time in my football life, I’d stopped enjoying it. At times I didn’t believe in myself,” he told Cadena Cope’s El Partidazo, as relayed by Marca.
“I was playing some games in England and I had the feeling that when I got into space, my teammates looked at me and I knew they thought I wouldn’t do anything good with the ball. It was driving me crazy. I had a bad time.”
Such was his anger at how he was perceived at the club, Morata also revealed his frustrations got the better of him on occasion, resorting to unfortunate outbursts upon arriving back home.
“I’ve smashed my phone after games. I’ve got home and thrown it against a wall,” he added.
“I had a back injury. I went to Germany for treatment… Two days later I played, my back hurt again, I had a terrible game. I had all these messages on my phone saying ‘don’t worry, good times are coming’ and I threw it against the wall.”
Having brought his Chelsea nightmare to an end by joining Atletico Madrid on an 18-month loan deal at the beginning of the year, Morata has since made that move permanent after the two clubs struck a deal in the summer.
The move has clearly been a fruitful one for all parties involved, with the striker netting seven goals in 12 games so far this campaign.
