The acting second in Command at Nsawam Female Prisons, Chief Superintendent of Prisons, Mrs Janet Asabea has said most female inmates are in their custody because of abuse of their children and murder of their husbands.
She told Adom News that other crimes committed by the female inmates include stealing and assault.
“Women also commit some other crimes which men commit,” Mrs Asabea said.
She expressed worry about the menace, saying most of the women are even single parents and anytime they interact with them (inmates) they complain about the welfare of their kids they have left home.
“Currently, we have 87 female inmates in our custody and the number of females who are now coming to prisons is increasing compared to previous years,” she said.
The acting second in Command at the Nsawam Female Prisons, outlining some challenges facing the female Prisons yard, said they lack vehicles to covey inmates who fall sick to referral centres for further treatment.
“We have nurses here who take care of the inmates but not every illness that they can handle but we find it difficult to transport such persons to nearby health centres for treatment due to lack of vehicle,” she said.
She revealed these when Holy City Fellowship International donated some items such as bags of maize, detergent, bag of rice and cooking oil among other things to the inmates.
Mrs Asabea received the items and thanked them for their kind gesture and pleaded with them to be doing that in every two weeks if possible.
Leader of Holy City Fellowship International, Evangelist Appiah Kubi, expressed worry about the cases that had landed the inmates there.
He added that he and his team will do more advocacy work to sensitise women about the need to be patient in all aspects of life to avoid committing and finding themselves in prisons.
“For three years now we have been visiting inmates through our prisons project but we used to donate to the male inmates but this time round we decided to come to female inmates,” Evangelist Kubi added.
