Augusta Lartey-Young: Meet The Presec Legon Teacher Who Won The Best Teacher Award In Africa


Ms Augusta Lartey-Young was named among the top three teachers at the 2019 African Union Continental Teacher Awards.

The African Union Continental Teacher Awards is aimed at demonstrating respect for teachers and the teaching profession, by encouraging and celebrating the committed teachers in Africa.

As part of the honour, Ms Augusta Lartey-Young was awarded a cash prize of $10,000.

We know most of you might be wondering who this teacher is, what she teaches and where she had her education.

Well, you don’t have to worry because we’ve got all that information about her. Here’s all you need to know about Ms Augusta Lartey-Young:

Teaching Career:

Augusta Lartey-Young currently teaches the English Language at the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Presec-Legon). She is also the Head of the Languages Department at Presec-Legon, a position she has held since 2013.

Ms Lartey-Young started her teaching career at Jachie-Pramso Senior High School in 2003 after completing her education at the University of Cape Coast.

After teaching at Jachie-Pramso Senior High School for two years after, she moved to Armed Forces Secondary School in Accra before joining the staff of the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School.

Ms Lartey-Young had her basic education at the Base Ordinance Depot Primary School, Burma Camp.

She attained her O and A Level education at Ghana Secondary School in Koforidua from 1989 to 1996.

Ms Lartey-Young was admitted to the University of Cape Coast in 1998 and graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French.

Later in 2012, Ms Lartey-Young attained a Master of Education (M.Ed) degree in Educational Planning and Administration at the University of Cape Coast.

Other Awards:

Before winning the AU Teacher Prize, Augusta Lartey-Young was winning awards in Ghana.

She was the first runner-up at the 2018 Ghana Teacher Prize.

Ms Lartey-Young was awarded a scholarship in 2016 to participate in the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Programme at the California State University in the USA.

Her father, Justice Isaac Lartey-Young is a retired High Court Judge and her mother, Mrs Janet Lartey-Young is a former employee of the Ministry of Defence.

Augusta Lartey-Young is a mother of two.
