Pink October: Here Are Some Famous Men Who Were Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

When we think Breast Cancer, we mostly think it’s about the women. Few men have been recorded to be diagnosed with this cancer but it’s more reason why we should all be checked.

Just like women, it’s important for men to also check regularly for a mass in their chests. As with all cancers, early detection is key. Here are some famous men who were diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Matthew Knowles

On October 2 2019, Mathew Knowles went on an interview on “Good Morning America” where he spoke about what it was like to break the news to his family.

Edward Rooke

He broke barriers by being the first black man to be elected to the Senate by popular vote in 1966. He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, and since then has dedicated his time to raising awareness of the disease.

Richard Roundtree

The leading man behind ‘70s ace detective Shaft and star of Roots, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993. “I thought he was questioning my manhood,” he wrote in an essay for Essence in 2009, sharing the day his doctor first told him he had breast cancer. “Women die from this, not men. How could I possibly have that?”. He did survive after a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Rod Roddy

The iconic game show announcer, whose jovial voice greeted contestants to “Come on down!” for 17 years on The Price is Right. In 2001 he was diagnosed with colon cancer, and he then later developed breast cancer. Before his death in 2003, he became a spokesperson for early cancer screenings.

Ernie Green

Former ‘60s Cleveland Browns NFL star Ernie Green played fullback for six years in the league. He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, along with his two older sisters. One of his sisters died, but he survived and has spent his time educated men about the disease.
