According to professor Glenn Geher, a psychology professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz, having certain personality traits can help a candidate crack a job interview. Professor Geher cited some latest research on the psychology of job interviewers to identify traits or characteristics of a candidate, which makes an interviewer want to hire him or her. It’s needless to say that confidence is one of the most appealing traits that make an interviewer want to hire a candidate. Feeling nervous before an interview is normal but do not let it impact you to such an extent that you end up acting nervous. It is always good to face all questions with confidence, which would give an impression to the interviewer that you are capable of doing what the role requires you to do. However, there is a thin line between confidence and arrogance. While confidence can help a candidate to make the right impression, arrogance, on the other hand, can rub off the wrong way.

A conscientious person takes his duties seriously and executes them well and thoroughly. According to professor Geher, conscientiousness is one of the most sought-after qualities in employees and they are also the most dependable ones because they know how to get a job done no matter what. Unlike confidence, conscientiousness is one quality which people cannot fake. So, it is important to come armed with information about projects you have completed or how you have delivered important work in tight deadlines. An interviewer cannot guess if you are a conscientious worker by just looking at you so, it is always wise to give examples of instances that prove you are a dutiful and sincere employee.


This is one quality which is very difficult to define but according to Professor Geher, interviewers may favour candidates whom they perceive as ‘warm’ as compared to those whom they believe to be ‘cold’. Such individuals are mostly people’s person and can make great team leaders and employers would definitely like to have such people in their organisation, right? Some qualities that can portray a person as ‘warm’ are a welcoming smile, agreeable nature, making people feel at ease, complimenting others etc. However, complimenting an interviewer or agreeing to everything he says just to impress him can backfire. It’s important to make people feel the warm vibe rather than just fake it.
