The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is usually on the firing line when it comes to the kind of healthcare services they render Ghanaians.
On social media, people have shared numerous stories of how they lost or nearly lost loved ones because they were not given good medical care when they visited the hospital.
However, with all the criticism, the hospital is still making improvements in terms of the kind of service offered and the procedure.
Last June, doctors at Korle Bu performed a historic procedure for the first time in West Africa.
The procedure, which is known as HIPEC (Hyperthermic (or Heated) Intraoperative Peritoneal Chemotherapy), is an alternative, innovative method of delivering chemotherapy (cancer treatment).
Unlike traditional cancer treatment that is delivered through the veins, HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly into the abdomen, making it a good option for advanced cancers that originated in or have spread to the abdominal cavity.

Now, the doctors at Korle Bu achieved a new milestone.
The hospital’s Urology Unit took a leap lead in the treatment and removal of kidney stones.
With the help from doctors at the Medi Tech Trust, UK, the doctors at Korle Bu’s Urology Unit performed seven kidney stones removal surgeries using a new minimally-invasive surgery technique called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
According to John Hopkins Hospital, PCNL is a technique used to remove certain stones in the kidney or upper ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) that are too large for other forms of stone treatment such as shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy.
With this technique, the surgery is performed by making a small 1 cm incision in the patient’s flank area. A tube is placed through the incision into the kidney under x-ray guidance. A small telescope is then passed through the tube in order to visualize the stone, break it up and remove it from the body. If necessary a laser or other device called a lithotripter may be used to break up the stone before it can be removed.
This is a highly technical surgery and it is a plus that doctors at Korle Bu were able to perform it.
