The whole world has been thrown into a state of shock and grief as one of the most controversial ex-presidents of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabi, has passed on.
He was president for 37 years and died at the age of 95.
He was known for his controversial remarks and colourful language during his nearly four decades of serving his country.
Here are some of his most famous quotes.
“We have this American president, Obama, born of an African father, who is saying we will not give you aid if you don’t embrace homosexuality. We ask, was he born out of homosexuality? We need continuity in our race, and that comes from the woman, and no to homosexuality. John and John, no; Maria and Maria, no. They are worse than dogs and pigs. I keep pigs and the male pig knows the female one.” – ZDC radio interview, 2015
“Since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people, and enjoys an attractive countenance – thus if it becomes necessary, I shall travel to Washington D.C, get down on my knee, and ask his hand.” – during a speech in 2003
“We equally reject attempts to prescribe ‘new rights’ that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions, and beliefs. We are not gays!” – UN General Assembly, 2015
On Jesus Christ
“I have died many times – that’s where I have beaten Christ. Christ died once and resurrected once.” – To state radio on his 88th birthday
On staying in office
“Some are saying ‘Mr Mugabe is old, so he should step down’… No! When my time comes, I will tell you.” – 2014
“Only God who appointed me will remove me — not the MDC (opposition), not the British.” – 2008
On seizing farms from whites
“You are now our enemies because you really have behaved as enemies of Zimbabwe. We are full of anger. Our entire community is angry and that is why we now have the war veterans seizing land.” – 2000
“Our party must continue to strike fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy.” – 2002
I asked one ANC Minister how come the whites have been left with so much power, and he said it was because of your friend Mandela. That was an ANC Minister who was saying that. Mandela went too far in doing good to the non-black communities, really in some cases at the expense of (blacks)… That’s being too saintly, too good.” – 2003
“I am still the Hitler of the time. This Hitler has only one objective: justice for his people, sovereignty for his people, recognition of the independence of his people and their rights over their resources. If that is Hitler, then let me be Hitler tenfold. Ten times, that is what we stand for.” – State funeral of a cabinet minister, 2003
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
