Organisations And Celebrities Boycott South Africa Over The Xenophobic Attacks

After all the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa currently, many celebrities have come out to express their displeasure and disgust at what is happening in the country.

Several known artistes and countries have taken to social media to express their sentiments about the ongoing attacks and others have openly taken actions.

Yesterday, Burna Boy’s explosion on Twitter was crazy!! The Nigerian Afrobeats singer vowed to never go to South Africa again until the government “wakes up.” Burna Boy is supposed to perform at South Africa’s Afropunk Festival.

Tiwa Savage took to social media to publicly announce that she will not be performing at a Festival she was scheduled to make an appearance at, on 21st September.

The Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth also joined the boycotting movement. He posted on Instagram that he will not be going for the Comic Choice Awards which was happening in South Africa, this weekend.

“I’m not sure how and when we got here. I won’t be attending the Comic Choice Awards this weekend in South Africa as scheduled,” he stated.

Zambia Football Association

Zambia’s football association has cancelled an international friendly match against South Africa scheduled to take place on Saturday in the capital, Lusaka but football association, in a statement said:

“The Football Association of Zambia regrets to inform members of the public that the international friendly match between Zambia and South Africa that was scheduled for National Heroes Stadium on Saturday, 7 September 2019 has been called off in view of the prevailing security concerns in South Africa”

These countries have reportedly withdrawn from the annual World Economic Forum that is to be held in Cape Town today, due to the ongoing attack on foreign nationals in South Africa.

Hot Fm, Zambia

The radio station in Zambia released a statement on social media saying they were going to stop playing South African Music. In the post, they wrote: “In light of the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, Hot Fm will cease to play music by South African artists on our airwaves until further notice.”


Many public figures and countries are openly condemning South Africa for these acts of violence and Africans all over the world are expressing disgust at what is happening.
