Literally Just An Appreciation Post for Yara Shahidi’s Style Aesthetic, Because It’s Everything

At 19 years old, Yara Shahidi has already made a name for herself. She’s graced multiple magazine covers, has a starring role on a breakout show and is one of the most influential people of her generation. She’s best known on Instagram, where she posts upcoming projects, goofy videos and messages about voting, BLM and otherworldly issues. Shahidi also supports other artists, constantly sharing their victories on her page.

Outside of social media and her role on Grown-ish, Shahidi has spoken on panels about politics and race, as well as openly spoken and written pieces on gun violence and reform. Oh, and did I mention she goes to Harvard? Casual.

And though she’s starred in campaigns for Chanel and sported custom Prada, Shahidi is just like any other 19 year old. She’s still sporting mini skirts and graphic tees, and she loves the athleisure edit (who doesn’t, honestly). “Fashion,” she told Who What Wear UK, “is a reclamation of identity.”

We can all take a few notes from her, whether that be style-wise or with what we use our voices for. I’ve gathered a few of my favourite Shahidi looks for your future style inspo, so take a look and let me know what your favourites are.

Soarin’, Flyin’

For the premiere of her first big movie, The Sun is Also a Star, Shahidi wore these amazing pants decorated with feathers. The tan colour of the look gave it a utilitarian feel, but the added feathers made the fit as fun as Shahidi. Consider me a bird of a feather, because I would 100% rock these pants.

Have We MET?

Have you ever been flexed on this hard? Shahidi wore a custom Prada fit for this year’s MET Gala and completed the look with a fluffy feathered jacket. Though this look is a little tough for everyday wear, I’d take the jacket for some prime cuddling.

Let Me Tulle You Something

This look gives a new meaning to “letting your hair down.” In all seriousness, though, I’d love to rock this fit out — the tulle top screams ready-to-party while the chic baggy jeans dress down the look. I’d pair it with a matching green purse and simple silver accessories.

Statement-Making

Shahidi wore this beautiful patterned top with red pants to the CFDA awards, where she was celebrating the creation of her Barbie doll and the brand becoming more diverse and realistic in terms of body image and race. I applaud not only that but the accessorizing of this fit. The simple black bag and clear heels allow this look to shine.

Call of the Wild

As I’m sure you can tell by now, Shahidi isn’t afraid of showing her true colours (or prints). While many might say to keep other pieces simple when rocking an animal print, she proves them wrong. The green pants and pink undershirt add more fun to the fit and make the look more unique to her style. I’ll be adding some colour to my next animal print fit.

You = Self Love

Another thing Shahidi makes clear is her love for everyone, including herself. This positivity-inducing shirt is designed by one of her friends, and proceeds from the shirt go to empower and educate young women living in underprivileged communities. Though the shirt is no longer available, there are plenty of graphic tees sold by other foundations that make being a stylish activist easy.

White Out

Consider this my summer uniform from now on. Since it’s so hot out rn, this minimal bodysuit/baggy shorts combo is essential, and I’m always in sneakers. If you’re looking to dress this outfit up, opt for sandals and some printed baggy shorts (men’s swim shorts work, too).

Orange You Glad

Saved the best for last. This look checks all my boxes — bright colours, sneakers and a cute denim skirt. The unexpected mix of the skirt and a sporty neon top make this look great, and the sneakers add some extra colour and comfort. This is a look I’m for sure recreating, but maybe with a green top instead of orange.

I love Shahidi’s street style looks, and am using her as style inspo for the rest of the summer. Her fun style is so eclectic though, and she ranges anywhere from athleisure to red carpet wear.
