Over the years, criminals have produced some pretty head-scratching headlines from their creativity to smuggle drugs —and here’s another one to add to the list, involving weed and jalapeños (a medium-sized chilli pepper).

CNN reports that almost four tons of weed were discovered inside a shipment of um… jalapeños. The jalapeños shipment was travelling from Mexico to the US when Border Patrol agents found the marijuana hidden inside the cargo. The discovery was made earlier this month when a truck driver was flagged for a secondary inspection at the Otay Mesa border crossing in California.

A K-9 team alerted officers to the jalapeños during the inspection. However, US Customs and Border Protection didn’t reveal why the 37-year-old male driver, a Mexican citizen, was initially flagged for a secondary inspection. Discovered inside the jalapeños, officers uncovered over 300 packages that field-tested for marijuana. Officials estimate the drugs seized are worth an estimated $2.3 million.

Otay Mesa Port Director Rosa Hernandez, had this to say about the shocking discovery:

“I am proud of the officers for seizing this significant marijuana load. Not only did they prevent the drugs from reaching our community, but they also prevented millions of dollars of potential profit from making it into the hands of a transnational criminal organization.”

At press time there has been no word on the criminal charges facing the driver, although it could be a harsh sentence as this is the second large marijuana bust this month. On August 13th, over 10,000 pounds were found inside a shipment of plastic auto parts.
