#ScreenShot: Why Being The “Bigger Bully” Is As Wrong As Being Just “The Bully”

Sometimes, the savagery we encounter online can force us to also push back. The hate becomes so intoxicating that you sometimes only respond by hitting back harder.

It’s a natural defensive mechanism that when someone is hurting you, the only way to make it stop is to also hurt the person harder than they are doing to you.

Unfortunately, this only means, we’re all out there hurting each other with no regards to knowing when to stop or even when and where to draw the line.

Such is the story of what has come to define the social media space we currently find ourselves in.

SwagMonnie, an artiste who recently performed at Tidal Rave 2019 as part of the Close Up 8 Break The Barrier artistes, recounted when he thought being the “bigger bully” was the only way he can put an end to the bullying he was experiencing online.

“My comeback all the time when being bullied was to be the “bigger bully”. Because I felt more comfortable and also because I was weak, obviously,” he told Kuulpeeps.com in a cyberbullying promotional video.

“I didn’t realise that being the bigger bully is also being the bully in general,” he added.

This is the vicious cycle which also explains the saying that people who are hurt also hurt people (hurt people, hurt people).

According to SwagMonnie, he didn’t realise this “until last year when I got bullied for no reason and my spirit was down I relaised I had hurt a lot of people’s of feelings in the past which I do regret now.”

Having learnt his life-changing lesson, he advised that the “best way is for you not to be bully no matter what it is.”

In essence, do not hit back. There’s no need for a comeback culture. You can do these instead if you’re being cyberbullied.

“Think about people’s feelings and put them first,” he said.
