Before we ‘borst’ your mind small, let’s go back to school a bit.
Aside from the fact that vegetables are those things we hate and fruits are the sweet stuff people usually turn to juice… what really makes a vegetable a vegetable and a fruit a fruit?
Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems.
According to the Merriam – Webster dictionary, “Anything that grows on a plant and is the means by which that plant gets its seeds out into the world is a fruit,”
So let’s look at the vegetables that are actually fruits because they are developed from the ovary of a flowering plant.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes have been legally accepted as vegetables in the USA but, technically, they are fruits!
Peppers
All the peppers from bell peppers to jalapeños are ll fruits!!!
Cucumbers
Your mind borst yet?
Eggplant
Yeah, we know you lot have been using it in the worst way possible via text but Eggplants are fruits and are even considered to be a type of berry!
Avocado
What we wrongfully call pear here in Ghana is actually a fruit. More like single-seeded berries so the next time you want to describe it as something, you know what to say right? Fruit!!!
Olives
We aren’t sure what to call olives because most of us only see and know the oil but olives are more fruits than vegetables. They fall under the same group as mangoes and dates
We told you your mind will borst!!
If you don’t believe us, google what fruits are… Now start looking at some of your so-called vegetables closely and ask yourself “did they develop from the plant’s ovary or they are a part of the plant?”
And that’s how you’d know
But hey, we can just ignore this and call them fruits/veggies and…we’d be fine right?
Lol, don’t. Stay smart!
