This will be the 44th edition of the UEFA Super Cup and history is going to be made tomorrow when Stephanie Frappart blows the whistle for the start of the game and takes charge as the first female referee to officiate a major men’s European match.
Stephanie Frappart will lead a team of referees that includes two female assistant referees; Manuela Nicolosi of France and Michelle O’Neal from the Republic of Ireland.
She, however, becomes the second female referee to officiate in a UEFA match overall, with Switzerland’s Nicole Petignat being the first, having taken charge several UEFA Cup qualifiers between 2004 and 2009.
The UEFA Super Cup game between Liverpool and Chelsea will be the first men’s game that she will be in charge of outside France.
Frappart was born on 14 December 1983 in Herblay-Sur-Seine, France. She reportedly stopped playing football at age 18 to focus on the laws of football to become an official.
Stephanie Frappart has been on the FIFA International Referees list since 2009. She kicked off her career as a referee by officiating the Championnat National, the third division of men’s football in France. In 2014 she was promoted to Ligue2, the second division of men’s football in France and became the first female referee to officiate in that division.
On April 28, 2019, she became the first female referee officiate in Ligue 1 when she was appointed to take charge of the game between SC Amiens and RC Strasbourg.
She was also part of the referees who officiated the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Frappart also officiated at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. Her brilliant performance during the competition was recognised and she was appointed to officiate the final match between the USA and Netherlands.
