Nancy Pelosi and her 14-member delegation yesterday, Tuesday, July 30, 2019, visited the Elmina and Cape Coast castles to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the First Enslaved Africans landing in America.
The visit to the castles is part of activities undertaken to celebrate the ‘Year of Return’.
The U.S Speaker and her delegation were welcomed to the Elmina Castle by the Paramount Chief of the Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Conduah VI.
They were taken around the castles and sent to the ‘Door of No Return’ where the slaves were sent through before they were shipped.
They were also conducted round the castle dungeons, the cannon turrets, white-washed walls, among other sites in the castles.
A wreath was also laid in front of the male dungeons at both the Elmina and the Cape Coast castles.
Nancy Pelosi addressed the Parliament of Ghana today, Wednesday, July 31, 2019. This made her the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to address Ghana’s Parliament.
