The finals of the 2019 National Science and Maths Quiz will take place tomorrow Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the National Theatre… And yeah, it’s an all boys school final!
Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Presec Legon), St Peter’s Senior High School (Persco) and St Augustine’s College (Augusco) who were brilliant throughout the competition will be battling for the supremacy and the bragging rights that come with winning the National Science and Maths Quiz.
Mind you, all three finalists are former champions.
Presec Legon has won it 5 times, Persco has won it 3 times and Augusco has won it once. So, Presec Legon is hoping to win its 6th title, Persco is also hoping to win its 4th and Augusco is hoping to win its second NSMQ title.
Out of these three finalists, St Augustine’s is the only school that began its journey in the 2019 NSMQ from the preliminary stages.
Augusco announced their presence in the competition with a massive win over two Northern schools; Bolgatanga SHS and Walewale SHS. They won that contest with 76 points – the highest number of points to be recorded in this year’s contest.
St Augustine’s went ahead to beat Regional rivals Mfantsipim School in the 1/8th Stage with a difference of 20 points to book a quarterfinals place.
They went on to beat Tamale SHS and Boa Amponsem SHS in the quarterfinals and Keta SHTS and G.S.T.S in the semifinals to make it to their second NSMQ final.
Now, to 5-time Champions, Presec Legon. They began their journey to the finals from the 1/8 stage where they beat Assin State College and Ofori Panin SHS with 47 points to book a quarterfinal spot.
Presec Legon had to beat three former champions en route to the final. They had a massive win against Pope John SHS and St John’s School in the quarterfinals; they won that contest with 68 points.
The Odadeε boys had a tougher task in the semifinals, but they overcame it as they knocked out 2-time champions Opoku Ware School and 2016 champs Adisadel with 48 points to make it to their ninth NSMQ finals.
And then, there is the defending champion, St Peter’s SHS. Out of the three finalists, St Peter’s kind of had it easy making it to the finals, judging by the calibre of schools they met. But like Presec Legon, St Peter’s also started their journey to a second consecutive final in the 1/8th stage with a win over Drobo SHS and Apam SHS.
They went on to beat Kpando SHS and T.I AMASS with 54 points in the quarterfinals, and Wesley Girls’ High School and Tepa SHS in the semifinals with 48 points.
So, the big question is… which of these three schools will win the 2019 National Science and Maths Quiz?
