We Finally Have A Black Princess Y’all!! Hallie Has Been Cast As Ariel And We Can’t Keep Calm About It!!

Yup! The Little Mermaid is Black y’all!!

2019 has to be called the year of inclusion because fam… no person of colour is accepting to be treated differently and we are all here for it.

Halle Bailey, one half of the musical duo, “Chloe X Halle,” has just been cast as Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action movie of “The Little Mermaid.”

The director of the movie, Rob Marshall, said in a statement that it was clear that Halle possessed that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice which were all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.

Now, even though we totally get it that she was, to paraphrase, just perfect for the role, there is a lot of backlash on the casting choice.

First of all, Ariel is originally a Danish Princess so technically it makes no sense to cast a Black girl for that role.

Don’t get us wrong. Yes, it’s really cool to see diversity and women of colour being given a chance to do things they’re good at but this is just … wrong… sort of.

Think about it this way, when Melissa McCarthy was cast as the villain, Ursula, everyone was furious, especially on Twitter. People kept talking about how Ursula was supposed to be a black character and how they’ve cancelled Disney and aaalll that! Now that it’s a black girl that has been cast as the main character, everyone is patting Disney on the back. The hypocrisy.

Anyways, we really are happy for Halle and we hope to see more Black Barbies in movies.
