Dr Mark Amo-Boateng, a lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), has created a device that has proven capable of alleviating energy crises in the country. He has developed a Backup Power System called PowerTube.

He uses batteries from discarded laptops. This is a unique way to deal with the tons of e-waste imported into Africa each year. The PowerTubes come in small and large versions. The system can last 2 to 10 years depending on the condition of the batteries.
The PowerTubes are very expensive each costing between €870 and €1500 which is approximately between 5120 and 8827 Ghana Cedis.

He has also created what has been ranked as the world’s fastest optimization algorithm, and an ultraviolet light technology that heals injuries. He also has a system that is capable of turning starch to plastics.
Also, he was the only semi-finalist from Africa who participated in the $7m Shell Ocean Discovery XPrize.

He has a lot of innovations to his credit and he’s currently the Ag. Head at Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre in UENR. Kudos Dr Mark Amo Boateng; UENR is proud of you, Ghana is proud of you as well.
