Since “summer-vacation” is here, most people keep shouting about their summer bodies, meanwhile, some of us are here with our potbellies and still eating banku at 8 pm.
Now that we are shining with our potbellies (yes… we are owning it with our chests!) there is a quick fix everyone is screaming about. Detox tea.
Apparently, once you take this tea, you’re good to go. You don’t need to exercise. Once you’re done with it, you’ll have flat stomachs and would have lost weight.
By now, especially after the whole NAM1 thing nu, (yup…we went there *eye roll*), you really should be wary about these quick fixes. Nothing really is that simple and cheap. Check out 5 reasons why you actually should run the opposite way when you see detox tea sellers.
They mostly contain laxatives
If you ask anyone who has taken these sort of teas, they’ll tell you that after taking these, they visit the loo frequently. This is because most of these teas contain a laxative called Senna. This works by stimulating your colon to contract more than it usually does, forcing out water and waste. Senna will make you look slimmer temporarily (thanks to losing water weight) but there’s no actual fat loss.
Abdominal Discomfort
Since they mostly contain high levels of caffeine and laxatives ingredients, they cause abdominal pain and discomfort, cramps, bloating, gas, and nausea.
Disruption of sleep
Detox teas may contain much more caffeine than is recommended in a single day. This can lead to problems falling and staying asleep.
Natural doesn’t mean safe
Just because something is labelled ‘natural’ doesn’t mean it’s safe for you to eat or drink. None of these products is regulated and manufacturers don’t really know the combined effect the ingredients will have on the body.
You can get pregnant
Let’s bost your mind ok. When you suffer from diarrhoea (passing six to eight watery stools in 24 hours) there’s a high chance the contraceptive pill hasn’t worked because it hasn’t been absorbed properly.
