We got a couple of people asking us if blackheads and pimples were the same and that has inspired this article.
First of all, there are various forms of acne and that’s where we see blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. They are all as a result of clogged pores.
Pimples
These are usually inflamed and sometimes hurt. Some stay small but others grow bigger. They are usually confused as another name for acne but it isn’t the case. It is just another manifestation of acne.
Whiteheads
They are clogged with an oily substance called sebum and have a white appearance. They usually evolve into pimples.
Blackheads
They are non-inflamed blemishes. They do not become big, they don’t hurt and you might not even notice that they are there unless you really inspect your skin in the mirror. Blackheads form when a pore is only partially clogged allowing some of the trapped sebum to slowly drain to the surface. Oh, and the black colour you see is caused by the oxygen in the air as it reacts to the exposed pore.
