Last week Friday, there were reports that the National Folklore Board was going to sue Marvel for using Ghana’s kente cloth and Adinkra symbols in its hit movie Black Panther with our seeking approval. This news generated a lot of talk on social media.

The board has, however, come out to state in a tweet that they have neither sued nor expressed an immediate intention to sue the producers of Black Panther.

According to the board, they are poised to assert Ghana’s IP rights in our folklore per their mandate under the copyright act, albeit through non-adversarial means.
The board also added that the success stories of some countries including Ethiopia and Kenya in asserting their IP rights in their folklore will be their guide.
