10 years ago…
In 2009, Sarkodie signed a record deal with Duncwills Entertainment and released his debut album Makye after he gained recognition as a rapper, spitting hard bars on Adom FM’s Kasahare.
In 2010, Sarkodie made history at the VGMAs, winning 5 awards:Artiste of the Year, Best Rapper, Best Album with the Makye album, Hip hop/hiplife artist of the year and Discovery of The Year.
In 2011, Sarkodie headlined his own concert at The Dome and dropped his second album, Rapperholic which was also the name of the concert.
Let’s not forget he was also one of the artistes who helped push azonto beyond our expectations!
In 2012, Sarkodie was the first Ghanaian to win BET’s Best International Act with Nigeria’s Wizkid and went on to be the only African featured in the BET cypher that year. He became the brand ambassador for Samsung which had his fans get the opportunity to download exclusive tracks of Sarkodie as well as receive customized wallpapers of the icon for every purchase.
In 2013, Sarkodie released the Sarkology album at his Rapperholic concert held at the Accra Sports Stadium! The remix of his song, Adonai also did so well that year he was featured on BBC’s Capital Xtra’s Top 35 Afrobeats Songs. He also launched The Sarkodie Foundation, which is tasked with the mission of supporting underprivileged children. He also launched his Sark clothing line
2014 was a great year for Sarkodie. He launched his own record label, Sarkcess Music and performed at the MTV Africa Music Awards where he won the best hip-hop Act. He was also on a song for DSTV’s Africa Rising campaign with Mi Casa, Davido, Diamond Platinumz and Tiwa Savage. He also performed at the VGMAs and won the Hip Hop Song of the Year with Illuminati, Album of the Year with Sarkology, Best Rapper of the Year and Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of the Year.
2015, Sarkodie dropped his live recorded Mary album which sold almost 4,000 copies on the day of its launch. He also sold out a concert at New York’s famed Apollo theatre called the Sarkodie History In The Making Concert. He also won the Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of the Year at the VGMAs and his song, Adonai with Castro won the Best Collaboration of the Year and Vodafone Song of the Year.
2016, Sarkodie’s musical prowess was recognized which had him invited to have a talk to a group of Harvard Business School students on the challenges an artiste faces in the Art of The Hustle. The 4th Rapperholic concert took place in December at the AICC and tickets were sold out in less than 72 hours. He also won the Best Rapper of the Year, Hip Hop Song of the Year with his song, Hand to Mouth and Record of the Year with the song Bra at that year’s VGMA. He also won the Best Entertainer award at the EMY awards.
In 2017, Sarkodie released the Highest album and his annual Rapperholic concert featured Big Shaq from the UK. He also won the Best Rap Act award at the Afrikan Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA). He won the Best Hip-hop/Hiplife Artiste Of The Year at the VGMAs.
2018, Sarkodie won the Hip Hop/Hip Life artist of the year and Best Rapper of the Year at the VGMAs. He also performed at his now anticipated concert, Rapperholic on the 25th at AICC.
Over the years, Sarkodie has grown to become a strong force in the Ghanaian music industry being recognized not just on his home turf but all over the world! His music has gone beyond borders and young artistes are constantly citing him as their icons and role models and he also plays the part exceptionally by giving the young acts platforms to showcase their music. He’s collaborated with a number of them on “Trumpet” and “Biibiba” and never hesitates to share music from any young act on his platform. To be recognized by Sarkodie is now an honour and it is no doubt that his hard work and consistency has pushed him to where he stands now…a recipient of the VGMA Artiste of the Decade award.
He now joins the legendary Kojo Antwi as the only two recipients of this award.
