This New Condom, Which Requires Four Hands To Open Emphasizes The Importance Of Consent

Consent is always required, but this new condom is making a point of it.

A new condom from Tulipán, an Argentinian sex toy company, is designed in such a way that it requires four hands to open it.

Videos posted on the brand’s Twitter account depict how the “Consent Pack” works.

Located along the edges of the condom box are four different sets of buttons. According to the video, in order to open the package, one person presses on two adjacent sets of buttons, while at the same time, a second person gets the other two.

To emphasize the importance of consent to sexual relationships, the phrases “placer consentido” and “placer con sentido” — which mean “consented pleasure” and “pleasure with sense” respectively — appear on the outer package.

“Tulipán has always spoken of safe pleasure, but for this campaign we understood that we had to talk about the most important thing in every sexual relationship: pleasure is possible only if you both give your consent first,” a spokesperson for BBDO Argentina, Tulipán’s ad agency, said in a statement obtained by Adweek.

Additionally, all of the videos posted by Tulipán have been shared alongside messages about the importance of consent.

“This pack is as simple to open as it is to understand that if it does not say yes, it is no,” reads one of the messages, according to Insider, while another says “Consent is the most important thing in sex.”

Although the condoms will not prevent sexual assault and rape, they do carry an important message which will hopefully continue to spread awareness about what consent is and what constitutes having received it.

According to the United Nations, an estimated 35 percent of women across the globe will experience sexual assault at some point in their lives.

Data from the National Sexual Violence Resource Centre states that in the United States, it’s estimated that one in three women and one in six men will experience some form of sexual violence.

Tulipán first began distributing the products for free in Buenos Aires, handing them out at bars and public events, according to Insider. The outlet went on to report that while the consent packs are not currently available for purchase online, the company will begin selling them on its website later this year.
