Ever since we were kids, governments school children and some private school pupils have been wearing a brown and yellow khaki uniform, which is commonly referred to as “kokonte ni ab3 nkwan.”

This has reportedly been used for more than 30 years now and it is worn by pupils from Nursery to JHS 3.

Today, the Ghana Education Service has introduced a new set of uniform for JHS pupils.

The “kokonte ni ab3 nkwan” will be worn until the reach  JHS 1 when they will swap the old uniform for this new one that was unveiled today.

The new uniforms for both girls and boys were showcased to the media.

They come with four features including the Ghana Flag, a certificate, a graduation cap.

The rationale for placing a Ghanaian flag on the uniforms is to symbolize nationalism and promote a sense of belonging.

Girls will wear a skirt and shirt version and not a pinafore.

The graduation cap, he said, symbolises intellectualism.

According to the Director General of GES, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa, the move to introduce new uniforms is to make the students at JHS level to start seeing themselves as senior high school students.

He stressed that “the idea is to psychologically let them see themselves as secondary students.”

The uniform will be worn at the start of the 2019/2020 academic year.
