Ashesi: Meet One Of The Youngest Budding Producers In The Ghanaian Music Industry

Producing is an art which few people tend to have mastery over at a very young age.

In 2018, he worked on Almighty Trei ‘s Astro EP and Down, Herman $uede’s Questions, African Prince, Pretty Mama, Kwesi Arthur’s Porpi and Don’t Keep Me Waiting 2, Kwamz and Flava’ Ohemaa, Leslie T’swag’s Big Bomber, Kofi Mole’s Another Round, DAY’s Calling, Quamina MP’s Bad Company, Ödartei’s Seduction, and the last but not the least, Sawyerr J’s Higher.

Kuulpeeps got in touch with Young D3mz to find out how he got into the music production scene.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Who is D3mz

Young D3mz: Yung D3mz is a versatile multi-genre record producer and songwriter from Tema, who loves to make music for the people

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What has been your motivation for producing?

Young D3mz: Growing up listening to all kinds of music got me interested in it pretty early, and playing instruments as well. I saw what impact artists had on the masses with their music, and I feel as if I can achieve that in years to come. The people keep me motivated.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What has been your biggest production thus far? And why?

Young D3mz: My biggest production is probably Kwesi Arthur’s Don’t Keep Me Waiting part 2. I say this without even checking the play count because when I look at how people felt when they heard it I knew we achieved our goal. Kwesi and I wanted people to feel the emotion of the song, and people loved it!

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Which song did you enjoy working on and why?

Young D3mz: I enjoyed working on Burn It Up by Almighty Trei so much, actually his whole Astro EP. Because that particular was a complete accident. Haha, my hand slipped off the keyboard and an alien sound came out. I went with it and it turned out to be a great record. Set the tone for the tape lol. Laughs*

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Are there any challenges you face in the industry?

Young D3mz: Yeah, a lot. Being so young people often undermine your abilities and opinion, so sometimes it feels like doors aren’t gonna be opened anytime soon. Also getting paid seems like a myth these days, the industry is tough on producers. It’s getting much much better though.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Is there anything that could be done to make your work easier

Young D3mz: I think a proper system for producers and artists in Ghana would be awesome. And personally, I need to get a home studio. Laughs*

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: How do the words flow when you’re writing? Do you know how to dance gwara gwara, zanku or something? Where does the inspiration come from?

Young D3mz: The words are always streams of consciousness, a mood I’m feeling at the moment. Sometimes I even write down potential song lyrics. Often I make it a note to know the artist’s thoughts, so I can help write coherent lyrics. Sometimes I have to jump around or take a walk I’ll admit lmao. I love reading lyrics and poems so they come quickly to me.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Do you come from a family of musicians or in the arts?

Young D3mz: Nah, not really. I’m a rare case in my family. But I have cousins that are in the creative arts industry.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Does it cost to make a home studio?

Young D3mz: No not necessarily, it depends on what you want. Just monitors, a sound card, a mic and you’re good to go

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Are your parents in full support of this?

Young D3mz: Yes my parents are in support. They made sure I learned to play an instrument when I was younger, so when I started producing it didn’t shock them. My dad really likes my beats lol

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: What’s your alma mater?

Young D3mz: I was in Tema International School for my secondary education

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Oh ok. Eishh dbee✌🏽. Are you in uni or you’ve dropped out?

Young D3mz: I get that a lot, lol. Laughs* I’m currently enrolled in Webster University Ghana, studying International Relations. I’m in my first year, and I hope to complete it, lol.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: You’ve got this. God is with you 100%. What do you enjoy doing apart from the usual?

Young D3mz: I love sports, mainly football. I’m a huge Chelsea fan, and I try to play at least once a week. I’m not that good though lmao. I like watching series too, I’m a Game of Thrones addict. Occasionally I might read a novel too.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: Me too. I love to read and write.

Young D3mz: Oh, for real? Awesome.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: This is it. Thank you for having Kuulpeeps Ashesi.

Young D3mz: Thank you too Kulpeeps Ashesi. You guys are doing amazing. I love your blogs.

Kuulpeeps Ashesi: We are honoured. We are glad you do.
