The Grounds Of Freedom: Reliving The Old Polo Grounds, Now The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

Ghana is 62 years today! And as a nation, we are celebrating 62 years of Independence from the British Colonial rule.

Sixty-two years ago, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah stood on the Old Polo Grounds with his colleagues to declare Ghana’s Independence in front of thousands of Ghanaians.

It was on the Old Polo Grounds that Kwame Nkrumah gave a remarkable speech and said: “Ghana your beloved country is free forever!”

Today, the famous Old Polo Grounds is now known as the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and its the place that houses the mortal remains of Dr Kwame Nkrumah. The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum is also a big tourist attraction site in Ghana. The mausoleum also serves as a Pan-African shrine for Pan-African activists and people from the diaspora.

The Mausoleum was built by Former President Jerry John Rawlings to honour the First President of the Nation.

After Kwame Nkrumah died in Romania in 1972, he was buried in Guinea. His remains were later sent to the town of his birth, Nkroful where he was buried in a tomb until his remains were finally transferred to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The Memorial Park is made up of the Mausoleum (where the remains of Kwame Nkrumah is buried) and the museum (where the personal belongings of Kwame Nkrumah including photos, books, pens, walking stick are kept).

The broken bronze statue of Kwame Nkrumah which was destroyed after he was overthrown can also be found at the memorial park. The statue originally stood at the Flagstaff House during Nkrumah’s presidency.

In front of the mausoleum is a statue of Dr Kwame Nkrumah pointing forward. The spot where the statue is currently is the same spot that Kwame Nkrumah stood on the 6th of March, 1957 to proclaim Ghana’s Independence.

Happy 62 years to Ghana and may God continue to bless our motherland and continue to make us great and strong.
