It is 2019 and the Unicode Consortium has revealed 230 new emojis set to be released and among them is the tiny penis icon nobody asked for.

The non-profit organisation today announced the introduction of the new emojis, including the international hand gesture for a small member.

There’s also an otter, which is handy for readers of cult celebrity gossip newsletter Popbitch, and a skunk emoji – we can’t imagine how that one might be (mis)used.

A drop of blood, an axe and a razor could have sinister undertones, while one of the new icons includes a banjo that looks like the one played by the chap in the famous ‘duelling banjo’ scene from Deliverance.

Unicode is also set to introduce a robotic arm that’s handy for cyborg feminists and a ringed planet for stargazers.

Chefs and those compiling shopping lists for their partners will be pleased to see garlic, butter and onions among the new food emojis, which also include a waffle.

More seriously, there are now guide dogs, a wheelchair and a cane used by blind people, which means people living with disabilities have more useful icons.

A total of 171 options for the gender and skin tone of couples holding hands is also going to be rolled out.

It’s up to individual phone companies to introduce the emojis, which are called Emoji 12.0.

Unicode wrote: ‘The new emoji typically start showing up on mobile phones in September/October — some platforms may release them earlier.’
