The Center for International Education (CIE), University of Cape Coast has held its first Biannual Study Abroad Fair for the semester with a call on students to make use of the many study abroad opportunities the centre offers.
The Assistant Registrar at the Centre, Alfred Ghartey explained that the centre provides a wide range of opportunities for qualified students to study in various partner institutions all over the world.The qualification demanded of undergraduate students to participate in the program, he explained, is a minimum of a year of regular studies and a CGPA of not less than 2.5.
“We have many partner institutions in US, Germany, China, Norway; almost everywhere. To be able to participate in the exchange programme, you should be a regular student of the university who has completed one academic year, and should have a CGPA of 2.5; and then you can go to the CIE website for the application form, come for the interview and you are ready to study abroad.”
For Postgraduate students, Mr Ghartey explained: “the student is either going to do a top of a course, or to write a thesis; in whichever case, you have to make a special arrangement to get you a supervisor or someone who will guide you when you are writing your thesis.”
To alleviate the fear of financial constraints, he added that the program runs on a scholarship basis hence interested students can participate with very little financial commitment.
“Tuition is free, so you don’t have to pay school fees, and then depending on the kind of partnership we go into, you can either get accommodation or insurance from one institution to another. In whatever case, one has to pay for the airfare or they may pay either accommodation or insurance.”
On her part, a beneficiary of the program, Sarah Borquaye, a level 300 Bachelor of Education in Social Studies student of the University of Cape Coast, appraised the program as a very laudable one as her stay at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden provided her with the opportunity to learn and network with people from different places and cultures.
