On Tuesday, the 22nd of January 2019, the Ashesi community gathered at the Archer & Cornfield yard to show their support to affected nations and pray for the entire African continent. This took place at 4:30 pm.
The vigil was hosted by the International Students Association (ISA). The candlelit vigil was dubbed ‘Prayer for Peace, Comfort, Safety and Unity‘. We all gathered in solidarity to pray for our continent.
A dark cloud looms on our continent with civil unrest in Zimbabwe, Sudan, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon. Some of our brothers and sisters from the above-mentioned countries here in this institution have been affected by the unpleasant events in their home countries, some have also lost their loved ones in the recent attacks.
For some of us who may not be aware, below is a brief summary of what has been occurring in the countries we have mentioned above:
1. Men armed with guns and explosives burst into a hotel complex in Nairobi, killing at least 21 people in an attack that lasted for hours and ended on Wednesday last week.
2. Several people have been injured and killed in Zimbabwe due to the current political instability. On the 15th January, the government of Zimbabwe ordered a shutdown of social media and the internet, depriving access to firsthand information. Although it was restored, several media platforms remain blocked.
3. Villages have been burnt down in Cameroon and many deaths have occurred due to the initial protest towards the government by English-speaking Cameroonians. So far, over 3,000 deaths have been recorded and several more injuries.
4. In Sudan many protesters have also been killed and injured due to the conflict currently taking place there.
5. The D.R.C is also facing armed conflicts and a lot of crises involving elections. There has also been a reported breakout of Ebola.
