Most children eat very weird things such as dirt a few times, but they learn that these things don’t taste nice and they stop eating them. Of course, we’ve all been victims before.

All the countless non-edible things we ate from playing around to the chalk some chewed in class and the ice cube we broke for sound effect. Charley the good’ol days

However, surprising as it may seem, there are others that go on eating these things though they certainly aren’t food such as dirt, hair, nails, ice and clay. This behaviour is called Pica. It is the continuous eating of non food substances most of which may be harmful to the body. It could be so addictive that some people can’t go a day without chewing ice or eating ‘shile

It could be a huge risk factor.

Here are some disadvantages and how to deal with the condition Pica

The main concern is when the substance consumed is harmful. For example, paint and soil can contain lead which can lead to lead poisoning. Eating soil can also expose you to worms. Never a fun experience, obviously.

To treat pica, the cause needs to be addressed. If you have a nutritional deficiency, which is a likely cause of pica, then your diet needs to be altered so that all nutritional needs are met. Zinc and iron pills and the correct diet will help solve this. If you aren’t a meat-eater, then make sure you eat foods rich in zinc and iron, such as beans, eggs, groundnut and dark chocolate (yep, you heard right).

Finally, it could be a mental disorder or in the long run result in one. If pica is diagnosed as a mental disorder, it should be treated as such. If you are a rock-biter or an ice-muncher and the addiction is real, make sure you look into what is causing it and proceed with caution preferably you could switch the ice with food like ‘ach)m)’. That’ll will do way more good to you
