Amaarae describes her sound as an eclectic blend of bold and sexy lyricism and longing vulnerable melodies. We agree with her cos her music sparks all sorts of emotions within us.
If you’ve heard her sing…we know for a fact you’re wondering if she sounds same. Lol no she doesn’t. She sounds pretty normal and is interesting, funny and smart.
The name Amaarae sounds very legit but sort of weird. She broke it down for us and well, it all started from Facebook.
“ when I was a freshman in high school, one of my favourite singers was Corinne Bailey Rae. I like the Rae and attached it to Ama and that was like my Facebook name. Amaarae Gyamfi. People loved the name, kept calling her that and…that was it. It got stuck.”
We’ve got extra love for the singer cos…she used to be a rapper!
Yhup, she used to drop freestyles on her Facebook page and even wrote bars for her friends. For her, at that point, she didn’t really consider it as songwriting…she was just helping out her squad.
In Atlanta, during her college days, just cos she’d heard how hard it was to make music, she focused more on sound engineering and music producing and did a lot of internships in studios. It wasn’t until she came to Ghana and made the song Lonely with Mutumbo which got some attention, that made her think…’why not stay and do this music thing’.
Her influences or inspiration come in the form of music icons like Stevie Nicks, Billie Holiday, Anthony Kiedis and almost unlikely artistes such as T-Pain, Young Thug and Missy Elliot.
“Don’t judge me”
For her, her talent and music are more than what we all think it is.
“I make music because I want to be able to master the power of emotions so I can sway a listener from joy to melancholy and right back to joy if I so choose”
Well, That’s low-key evil if you ask us. Amaarae has performed on various stages with some of the really big ones being Ghana meets Naija and Mr Eazi ‘s Detty Rave concert.
