The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana-Legon, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu has made a plea to the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Mr. Shi Ting Wang to support PhD students who have an interest in the study of Chinese language.

There are at least 8 different languages spoken in China with a number of variations in dialects, however, there are three official Chinese languages which are Mandarin Chinese, Standard Mandarin and Uyghur.

China is currently the second largest economy in the world and currently, people who communicate in any of the official Chinese languages are halfway through getting on the good side of the leaders of this fast-rising economy.

If Ghana wants to continue improving the economic ties with China, then it will be important to train a number of Ghanaians to communicate with Chinese leaders in their own language.

This fact is evident in the increased number of Ghanaians who are choosing to study Chinese language and as a result, the faculy strength to support the demand at the University of Ghana has become inadequate.

To solve this problem, the VC of the University of Ghana called on the Chinese Ambassador for his support.

Prof Oduro Owusu appealed to Mr Wang to “consider granting scholarships for PhD students to study in China and come back to help in teaching here at the University to support the staff base at the Chinese language centre.”

Prof Oduro Owusu made the appeal when he attended an award ceremony to award 50 Ghanaian students for excelling in the study of Chinese language.

We hope the Chinese ambassador will provide the scholarships the VC appealed for.
