2018 was a great year! We had great news and bad news and out of the good and bad news, we had great news headlines this year. So we decided to put together the top news headlines for the year 2018.

The Consolidated Banks:

The Bank of Ghana merged 5 banks that were on the verge of collapse to become Consolidated Bank Ghana (UniBank, Beige, Construction Bank, Royal Bank and Sovereign Bank).

Towns named after Private parts of the human body:

We bet most of you never knew there places in Ghana that had such names until they were mentioned on the floor of parliament because they had been deprived of electricity for years. The towns are in the Abirem constituency and they are; TW3NWINSO, ETW3 NIM NYANSA, KOTE Y3 ABOA, and HWOA Y3 MMOBO.


Menzgold Shut down by SEC:

The Securities and Exchange Commission ordered Menzgold to shut down operations because aspects of Menzgold’s business which involves purchase and deposit of gold collectables and guaranteed returns is a capital market activity under Act 929 and Menzgold did not have a valid license issued by SEC which contravenes the law.

The Ibrah ‘Money Laundering’ Saga:

The name ‘Ibrah’ really dominated in news headlines this year largely due to his alleged arrest by the police for an alleged money laundering case. Ibrah went ahead to mention names of people who also deal in fraud business and one of the names that came up was Nana Appiah Mensah, CEO of Menzgold and Zylofon Media.

KNUST SRC Demonstration:

After series of brutalities meted to students of KNUST by the school’s securities and oppression from university authorities, the SRC decided to embark on a peaceful demonstration to register their displeasure at the negative treatment been meted out to them in the school. However, the peaceful demonstration turned violent after the police allegedly fired warning shots which angered the students who vandalised school property.

Kofi Annan’s Death:

Former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan died on Saturday, 18 August 2018 in Bern, Switzerland. His death was so unfortunate and many influential people in the world paid tribute to his death. He was given a state burial in Ghana on 13 September 2018.

Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur’s Death:

Former vice-president of Ghana died on 29, June 2018 after he was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital. He collapsed at a gym during one of his routine workouts. He was buried on 27, July 2018.


Saudi Arabian Women Allowed To Drive Cars:

Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that didn’t allow women to drive. However, the rule that hindered Saudi women from driving cars reversed on Ist June 2018. The reversal of this rule now made Saudi women eligible to drive cars.

Marijuana Legalised In Canada:

It was a happy day for citizens of Canada when the government approved the use of cannabis. Canada became the world’s second and largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace.

Trump’s “Shithole” Comment:

Donald Trump

Controversial US President, Donald Trump referred to African countries and others in the Caribbean as “shithole” countries. His comment generated reactions from people all over the world, especially people from the areas he referred to as “shithole”.

Melania Trump Visits Ghana:

Melania Trump

Melania Trump, wife of US President, Donald Trump visited Ghana and the purpose of her visit to Ghana was to promote her flagship campaign as FLOTUS called “BE BEST”.

Royal Visit Ghana:

The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall were in Ghana for a five-day visit. The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwell arrived in Ghana on 2nd November 2018. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II treated them to a special Akwasidae Festival.

The Royal Wedding (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle):

The most anticipated royal wedding since Prince William’s marriage to Catherine Middleton happened this year. Yeah, Prince Harry got married to Hollywood star Meghan Markle on 19, May 2018 at St George’s Chapel. The wedding was graced by the world’s most influential people. It was really a great event to behold.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas

Investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger eye team premiered ‘Number 12’ a film that exposed the rot and corruption in Ghana’s football.

Colin Kaepernick Announced As The New Face Of Nike:

Colin Kaepernick was unveiled as the face of Nike two years after he knelt down while the American National Anthem was played. In 2016, Kaepernick refused to stand for the anthem in protest of police violence against African-Americans.

Moesha’s Interview On CNN:

Moesha was interviewed by Christine Amanpour on a CNN show called Love and Sex Around The World. In the interview Moesha said because of the country’s economy, women need men to take care of them since it’s difficult for women to make money in the country.

Ebony’s Death:


It was a sad day for music lovers and fans of the 90s Bad Girl when news broke of her death. Ebony was killed in a gory accident on the Sunyani-Kumasi highway after visiting her mother in February. She died alongside her friend, Franky Kuri and Francis Atsu Vondee, a military officer, who were travelling with her.

H&M Racism Scandal:

H & M (Hennes & Mauritz AB) a Swedish multinational clothing-retail company which has a reputation for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children, featured a black child modelling a hoodie with the slogan “coolest monkey in the jungle” inscribed on it. The picture was used on the children’s section of the UK site.

People, especially black people, were not comfortable with the ad, and took to social media, Twitter especially to call H & M ‘racist’ and tagged  the photo as unacceptable. Some consumers threatened a boycott and vowed to stop shopping at their stores.

The company later removed the image from all their channels and apologised to all those who were offened by the image.

Buju Banton Out Of Jail:

Jamaican dancehall musician, Buju Banton was released from prison on 8 December 2018 after serving 7 years of a 10-year sentence. Banton was convicted in 2011 of firearms and drugs charges.


Meek Mill Out Of Jail:

Meek Mill

Meek Mill was granted bail by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after being incarcerated since November 2017 for violating his probation. He was convicted in 2008 on charges related to the possession of drugs and guns, serving eight months in prison before being placed on probation for five years.


Kwesi Arthur’s BET Nomination:

2018 was a great year for Kwesi Arthur as he got his first BET Awards nomination for the Best New International Act category. Unfortunately, Kwesi Arthur did not win the award. He lost to South Africa’s Sjava.

Sarkodie’s ‘Advice’ To Shatta Wale:

Social media went mad after Sarkodie released a freestyle titled ‘Advice’ which was a diss track directed at Shatta Wale. Many people including celebrities took to social media to show their reaction to the song.

Davido’s Assurance To Chioma:

Davido, Chioma

Nigerian singer, Davido was boo goals this year as gave his girlfriend Chioma, “Assurance and a lifetime Insurance”. Yeah, the singer bought a Porsche for his girlfriend on her 23rd birthday and as if that wasn’t enough, he made a song for her titled “Assurance”.

Kanye West’s Slavery Comment:

Kanye West

Kanye West in an interview on TMZ said that 400 years of slavery was a choice. He later apologized for his comment after he was bashed severely on social media.

The Cardi B and Nicki Minaj Fight:

These two have been beefing for a long time and their beef finally resulted in blows at a New York Fashion Week party.  The fight took place on the first-floor balcony of the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party, during a performance by Christina Aguilera.

Mac Miller’s Death:

Mac Miller was found dead in his Studio City, Califonia home n 7 September 2018.  Two months later, the cause of his death was confirmed. He died from “mixed drug toxicity”, specifically fentanyl, cocaine along with alcohol too.

Deportation Of Kweku Adoboli:

Kweku Adoboli

Kweku Adoboli is a 38-year-old former UBS trader who was deported to Ghana after serving prison time for fraud. He lived in the UK for 26 years.

Blackstars defender, Samuel Inkoom was also in the news for claiming in an Instagram post that he has been married for 12 years. Being married for 12 years is not a bid deal huh… But the issue was that Inkoom according to Wikipedia was 28 years, so it meant he got married at the age of 16. Also at the time of his post, he had 4 kids and the third child was 5 years old. So… we hope you get it…

Sarkodie Performs At Manifestivities’18:

History was made on 23rd December at the Bukom Boxing Arena when Sarkodie showed up and performed at Manifest’s Concert. Y’all know and have heard of the so-called beef between these two, but love and unity conquered all beef when these two rap giants performed together on the same stage.
