The students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology were supposed to return to school today after the school was shut down following the peaceful demonstration that ended up being violent.
Now, the chaos that occurred on the streets of the campus has moved to the boardroom as the government fights with the UTAG about the constitution of a new governing council.
When the government attempted to empower the interim governing council to run the university for three months failed, the government deferred to the Chancellor of the uni, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to constitute a new governing council.
It is that process that has put the school in an administrative limbo because the government’s position is that the people from UTAG who were on the old governing council must not be included in the new council.
However, the other institutions are bent on nominating the same people to serve on the council.
This tag of war between the government and UTAG means KNUST doesn’t have a governing council. As a result, the uni cannot reopen today.
Good evening KNUST,
Unfortunately school does not resume tomorrow due to the Council not constituted yet.
We are still in talks with the appropriate authorities to return academic life to normal as soon as possible.
Let us keep calm.
We promise to keep you updated.
