Following a civil disobedience campaign launched by a number of Ghanaian drivers who use the Accra Tema motorway, the government has decided to finally reconstruct the road which has now become a death trap.

Motorists who use the road have decided to stop paying the Tema Motorway road toll until the government reconstruct the pothole-ridden high-speed road.

At night, the road is plunged into darkness as the streetlights on the road do not function.

However, while presenting the 2019 Budget to Parliament, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning said “2019 Government in partnership with the private sector through PPP arrangements will undertake various projects including Accra–Takoradi Highway Dualisation, Accra – Tema Motorway and Accra – Kumasi Highway Dualisation.”

The Accra–Takoradi Highway Dualisation and the Accra – Kumasi Highway Dualisation is a grand plan to construct dual carriage roads on from Accra to Takoradi and from Accra to Kumasi.

This was part of a road safety campaign request by Sarkodie when he released his song “Wake Up Call” after Nanahemaa Ebony Reigns died in a gory car accident while returning from Sunyani to Accra.

That also followed his own near-fatal road accident.
