#GHBudget: Government Secures Approval For USD50m Loan To Complete University of Ghana Medical Centre


The opening of the University of Ghana Medical Centre has been of the things Ghanaians have had to fight.

People had to literally protest and agitate before the government yielded and worked with the University of Ghana authorities to open the hospital for use.

Meanwhile, phase II of the medical centre has not been completed and now the government has announced that it is awaiting a value for money audit to enable it to access a USD 50 million loan.

The loan agreement has already been approved by the parliament.

“To address the inadequate health facilities that continue to bedevil our fellow Ghanaians, Government has received Parliamentary approval for a USD50m loan to complete Phase II of the University of Ghana Medical School which is awaiting the conclusion of a Value for Money audit” the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Ken Ofori Atta said when he presented the 2019 Budget to parliament.

Work on Phase II of the UGMC will begin when the loan amount has been received.

The Minister did not give timelines with regards to the start and project completion date of Phase II of the UGMC.
