Heard of oligospermia (ol-ih-go-SPUR-me-uh)?

Big word?? Lol, don’t bite your tongue. It’s just the big word doctors coined for low sperm count.

Low sperm count, aka oligospermia, is when there are fewer sperms than normal in your semen.

Let’s just say it’s when you shoot but your bullets don’t kill because the odds that you’ll impregnate your partner is low kraa. Lol.

Are the veins in your testes swollen??

Drugs

Abstain from using illicit drugs like marijuana and cocaine as they can reduce the number and quality of your sperm as well. Taking anabolic steroids like Androderm and Winstrol can cause your testicles to shrink and sperm production will decrease. Even smoking tobacco can cause low sperm count.

Alcohol

Yes, please. Stay off the excessive alcohol intake because it lowers testosterone levels. Testosterone is the hormone mainly in charge of sperm production so if testosterone levels drop then sperm production decreases.

Heat

Ever wondered why your ‘stuff’ is hanging out of your body? That’s because the body’s normal temperature, 36C, is too hot for your testes to function normally. Always keep temperatures low around that zone. Instead of wearing tight boxers or briefs, try to wear lose ones. Limit your use of saunas and hot water and avoid sitting for long periods or using your laptop for long periods. As much as possible don’t bake your testes. Just don’t.

Weight

You are wondering, right? Obesity is associated with hormonal changes. Since hormones are involved in sperm production this can reduce your fertility rate. It’s important to maintain a healthy weight.

Environmental toxins (x-ray, radiation, chemicals)

Avoid excessive exposure to radiation, heavy metals like lead and chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents and benzenes. These toxins affect sperm production and increase infertility.

Emotional stress

Severe or prolonged emotional stress and depression, including stress about fertility, might interfere with hormones needed to produce sperm. Reduce stress as much as possible.

Lack of Exercise and sleep.

Believe it or not but getting a good night’s rest, about 8 hours of sleep, can do some magic for your sperms. Regular exercise, at least 50 mins of exercise 3 times a week, can also improve sperm count.

Lack of Vitamin D and calcium

Studies have found that vitamin D and calcium improve the health of sperms. Eat foods such as milk, egg yolk, soybean and even orange juice that are rich in these nutrients and watch your sperm count improve remarkably.

Ginseng

Indian ginseng, or ashwagandha, is famous in traditional medicine as a remedy for many sexual problems, including low sperm count. Taking ginseng daily can increase testosterone levels, sperm count and improve fertility.
