Manchester United are considering a move for Juventus dream team Beppe Marotta and Antonio Conte as the pressure mounts on Jose Mourinho.

United’s start to the season has been undermined by speculation surrounding the future of Paul Pogba, whose relationship with Mourinho appears to have totally broken down.

Alexis Sanchez and Antonio Valencia are among a group of several other senior players reported have lost faith in Mourinho, who was yesterday asked to respond to speculation that Zinedine Zidane had contacted him.

The former Real Madrid manager is the current favourite to succeed Mourinho but is said to harbour doubts about the role, despite having started English lessons with a view to working in the Premier League.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, United are considering an intriguing alternative which would see Conte and Marotta reunite at Old Trafford.

Moratta confirmed last week he is set to leave Juventus having played a pivotal role in masterminding their domination of Serie A and return to the top table of European football.

Conte won three Serie A titles working under Moratta before he left to manage the Italian national team, before his tumultuous but highly successful spell at Chelsea.

The 49-year-old’s relationship with Moratta was not always a harmonious one, with Conte often complaining of a lack of support in the transfer market, mirroring the gripes which eventually led to his downfall at Stamford Bridge.

United are already said to have begun the search for a director of football which would see current executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward take a more commercially focused role.

Moratta is seen as an ideal candidate but he is also coveted by the Italian Football Federation who are considering a total overhaul after the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for last summer’s World Cup.
