No matter how mutual the decision to divorce is, it is still an emotional process for the couple and their children. Even by extension the extended family – especially in an African context.

However, the strain on the people involved is even more stressful when it looks like the divorce proceedings will be one drawn out protracted messy legal battle.

Most often when that happens, the children are mostly caught in the middle of the fight.

Recently, it came to light that the fashion designer Elikem Kumordzie has filed for a divorce from his wife, Pokello.

However, Pokello also went ahead to file a motion fighting Elikem’s petition for a divorce.

When a divorce is going to be messy – this is how it usually starts.

However, for no fault of his their son, Elikem Tristan Tasimba is the one caught in the middle of the mummy and daddy fight.

Knowing the toll the process could take on his son, Elikem took to Instagram to share an Open Letter addressed to his “Sweet boy.”

Below is the full letter Elikem wrote to his son, Elikem Tristan Tasimba.

LETTER TO MY SON

My dear sweet boy,

You are such a blessing to my life and I love watching you grow! You are just now beginning to show your amazing personality and I am so proud of the young man I see you becoming. You are more perfect than I could have ever dreamed. I knew from before I started having babies that one day I would have a son; I even had your name picked out!

Son, I wish I could change some of the harsh realities that have already happened in your young life. I wish we lived in a world where tragedy didn’t strike innocent children. But I can’t change the past and I can’t protect you from all the bad things, as much as I want to. The best I can do, son, is teach you and guide you to the best of my ability. As you grow, there are a few fundamental things I want you to cling to. Use them as your guidebook, especially when life gets tough.

SPREAD KINDNESS LIKE WILDFIRE.

Your dad is the epitome of kindness. Everywhere I go and to everyone I meet, I spread kindness and laughter. Son, you have your Daddy’s same kind heart and compassionate nature. Hold on to that, even when life gets hard. The reason why your Daddy is so widely loved and admired is because he loved and admired everyone around him. Everyone deserves kindness, baby. Don’t be afraid to show it.

BE BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS.

There will be times in your life where you’d rather hide or run or bury your head in the sand than face whatever challenge is in your way. I know because I’ve been there many times. In those times, be brave and show courage. But bravery and courage don’t have to come from you; in fact, it often doesn’t because we, as humans, struggle with the strong grip of fear. Often times it overwhelms us. When that happens, always call on God to give you courage and be brave. He will give you the strength you need to get through the battle.

BE RESPECTFUL

PUT GOD FIRST

IT’S ALWAYS THE RIGHT CHOICE TO DO THE RIGHT THING

My baby, you are far too young for any of this to mean anything to you right now. But I promise that one day you will need these bits and pieces of advice. Tuck them away in your heart and draw them out when you need them.

LOVE. ELIKEM “THE TAILOR” DAD

Elikem and Pokello married in Zimbabwe in 2015 after they had already washed their dirty linen on social media and all but cancelled their plans of getting married.

Elikem proposed to Pokello with much public spectacle. Before presenting an award at the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Elikem proposed to Pokello who said yes with the entire Ghana watching.

This divorce is an ugly end to a love relationship that started in the Big Brother Africa house.
