A former lecturer of the Department of Chemistry, UCC, Dr Owusu Akyiaw Bempah, has developed a drug known as Fenomin Tablets for treating, curing and preventing diabetes complications.
Speaking at a Seminar Series at the School of Physical Sciences on the topic, “The Cause, Cure and Prevention of Diabetes Complications”, Dr Akyiaw disputed claims by some medical doctors that diabetes was not curable because they thought it was caused by high blood glucose level.
He explained, “Diabetes is caused by the effect of vitamin deficiencies in the microcirculation that leads to damage to the organs”.
Dr Akyiaw said reducing the risk of diabetes complication was essential because the disease could affect vital organs in the body such as the heart, brain, liver, and kidney. He said diabetes could cause painful sores on the skin and the gum.
He advised people suffering from diabetes to desist from eating plantain and banana to manage their sugar levels. According to him, a research he conducted revealed that what caused plantain to ripe are enzymes.
“Plantain has enzymes which convert carbohydrate to sugar so I figured that if you eat plantain whether ripe or green, you’re increasing your enzyme concentration. The consequence is that the more the enzyme, the faster carbohydrate is converted to sugar in the body and for a diabetic, sugar going into your blood quickly means trouble” he warned.
The Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Prof. David K. Essumang commended Dr Akyiaw for coming out with the drug.
“We need to encourage our own scientists who have developed medications for diseases which are known to have no cure as we are made to believe and try them on people who have such ailments to see how it works” he noted.
