A Cafe Owner Slammed After He Sold “Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Biscuits”

A 47-year-old Portuguese Cafe owner, Jose Goncalves caused uproar after he started selling x-rated cookies with the label “Ronaldo cookies” at his “Our Taste of Portugal” eatery for 50p each.

The Portuguese national, who has lived in Worcester for ten years, claimed the biscuits were “just a bit of light-hearted fun” that played up to the “dark British sense of humour”.

But the cookies, showing two people having sex from behind, were pulled from sale after an outcry from charities supporting rape victims.

Juventus star Ronaldo, 33, is accused of assaulting Kathryn Mayorga, 34, at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009, which he denies.

Mr Goncalves, who has run the cafe in Worcester for four years, said: “I’m sorry for any offence they may have caused but I thought it was just a bit of fun.

“The Portuguese have a tendency to laugh off everything and I thought this would also appeal to the dark British sense of humour.

“Most people seemed to find them funny. All the people who came in, they all had a laugh and took it in the spirit intended.

“They bought them to take to their friends and family because they know the news about Ronaldo and they compare that with the cookies and they have a laugh.”

He claimed he had sold about 50 to 70 of the cookies before pulling them off the shelf.

He added: “I would not make a joke about a serious crime such as rape as I have experience of it in my own life but nobody in our country thinks Ronaldo did it.

“They are not even biscuits of a man and a woman having sex anyway.

“It is two men and we use them for gay parties and make them for Gay Pride each year. They are just silly shaped biscuits.

“I deeply regret it now though because of some of the comments I have received and I can only apologise. It may have been a mistake on reflection.

“They were only on sale for a couple of hours and I won’t be selling them again because I fear for the reputation of my business.”

He later said he loved the footballer, saying: “I’m sorry if I made people feel bad. I just have to say sorry to everyone.”

Lydia Johnson, a referral coordinator at The Glade, a sexual assault referral centre in Worcestershire, said it was never OK to make a joke about rape or sexual assault.

She said: “I couldn’t really believe it when I saw it on Facebook, I was disgusted to hear about it.

“There’s really no circumstance when it’s ever going to be OK. It’s disappointing and infuriating really to think anybody would think it was a good idea.”

Others slammed the decision to sell the biscuits with the title, saying: “What kind of disgusting people try to make a joke out of rape and capitalise on it in the form of ‘Ronaldo cookies’?

“Our Taste of Portugal in Worcester does.

“Please share, and if you can, skip a coffee/ cake and donate the money to your local rape crisis instead.”
