The 55th UG Inter-Hall games commence today, Monday, September 10 and end on Friday, October 12, 2018, at 3:00 pm each day on all the fields and courts of UG. All fifteen Halls of residence, Distance Education and City Campus Units are warming up for this much-awaited event. The participating teams will compete for the coveted trophies in Badminton, Basketball (women), Cross Country, Football, Goalball, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Table Tennis and Volleyball in this year’s games.
Akuafo Hall, champions in the 2017/2018 Inter-Hall Games, is determined to defend its trophy right from the onset. A word from the sports secretary, Richard Bannor, indicates that most of their athletes are still around to continue their impressive run in the Inter-Hall Games. Rivals such as Mensah Sarbah, Commonwealth/Volta and Legon Hall as well as halls in the diaspora and the satellite campuses would want to win the games to send a message of intent that they are no pushovers.
The 55th Inter-Hall Games will see the return of male football after seven years of it being played in a league format. The Head Coach, Mr. Henry Sackey, remarked that due to lack of training time for the University Football male team which has affected the performance of the team in recent times, the format had to change.
The University through the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) has admitted talented sportsmen and women across all the disciplines. In addition, some continuing student and freshers’ have received scholarship packages via the University of Ghana Sports Fund. These support programmes should be one of several motivating instruments for the athletes to excel on the fields and courts. The games also serve as a preparatory opportunity for the teams in anticipation of the Bilateral Games in the University of Ibadan in October and the Mini-Ghana Universities Sports Association Games in January 2019.
There will be live updates on Sports Directorate’s social media handles (Facebook: @UG Sports Directorate, Twitter & Instagram: sports_ug) and periodic updates on its website www.sports.ug.edu.gh.com. Radio Univers 105.7 and other sister radio stations will also cover the event and inform the University community and the general public.
We will also give you a report on what goes down at the competition. We wish all the teams the best of luck!
