Procrastination. I do it, you do it…everybody does it. (I did it by writing this article.) It doesn’t seem awful at the moment, and YouTube and Netflix are always appealing. But then it hits you—that panic of an essay due in 10 hours or a 20-page packet that you haven’t looked at since the teacher gave it to you a week and a half ago.

When it hits, it can go one of two ways: you’re so stressed that you create some sort of masterpiece, or it ends up being really rushed and terrible. It’s hardly ever the first option. So, what can you do? I have three tips that are sure to help you stop procrastinating. So push off your homework one last time and read this article!

1. Plan it out

Agendas are your best friend, and everybody has one on their phone. There are two options: your calendar or your notes. If you use notes, it’s beneficial to create a checklist so you can note when you have completed a task. If the calendar is more your style, then it’s best to plan out any known assignments on specific days, giving yourself a set time. Doing this adds a little more control to your life and can help with the next tip…

2. Prioritize

Chances are you have a lot of stuff going on in your life. It’s okay, we all do. But sometimes there isn’t enough time to get everything done. It’s important to decide which things are most immediate or important. Which assignments are due first, and which ones will take longer to complete? Give these items more time and focus, because these will have a bigger impact on your life. Putting more effort into it means you’ll get higher-caliber results. 

3. Take a break

Time to get real. The more you push off an assignment, the more you have to marathon it. And sitting down to get through it in two hours is going to make it that much more miserable. Breaking it into smaller chunks and getting right to work is beyond helpful. Treat it like a workout, completing a rep and giving yourself recovery time. Work for 30 minutes before taking a 10-minute break, and repeat this until the assignment is done. This works to alleviate the stress that can accumulate after trying to do something for too long. It also helps you avoid the temptation to look for distractions.
