Among these able bodied students is Vanessa Okobour.  She has been appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the General Assembly. This position has never been filled by a female in the history of the UG SRC.

We caught up with her and had a little conversation about her new GA position.

Here is how it went down:

Kuulpeeps Legon: Hi ,! Madam Chinese Deputy Speaker, tell us what’s your name?

Vanessa: Ei Lol! I’m Vanessa Nana Ofosua Okobour, Level 300 Political Science and Chinese Combined Major and a resident of Mensah Sarbah Hall.

Kuulpeeps Legon: So for our new readers who don’t know why we call you Chinese speaker, please refresh our memory. What is it about China?

Vanessa: Oh! A while back ,I  basically talked about the expectations we have about the China’s 8 initiatives to set up cooperation with Africa which includes industrial promotion, infrastructural connectivity, trade facilitation, green development, capacity building, health care, people to people exchange and peace and security. And what we African youth think about these projects. I also spoke about the green development and how it would improve the lives of so many people

Kuulpeeps Legon: Ay You are breaking some glass ceilings! We are super proud.  Please brief us about the General Assembly and your new position.

Vanessa: Okay so the General Assembly (GA) is the highest decision making body with committees to help deliver its services to its people. So as the Deputy Speaker of the house, its my duty of assist the speaker during meetings and also preside over meetings when he’s indisposed. Yeah so basically.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Have you held any position before this position in your hall or probably outside?

Vanessa: Yes, in my hall I was in Sarbah’s Parliament, WOCOM Organizer, Welfare Committee Head, and Parliamentary Select Committee Head .I guess those are the fresh ones I have in memory.

Kuulpeeps Legon: How does it feel to be the first ever lady to be among the leadership of this administration?

Vanessa: It feels very exciting and nerve racking because anyone that knows me knows that I like challenges.

Kuulpeeps Legon: So, who or what pushed you to go for such a position?

Vanessa: I realized that it was very difficult for females to go for such positions so I saw I wanted to make a difference and also create a path for females to be like me or even sail higher. So when it comes to the Who factor, I’ve looked up to people to the likes of Hanson Agyemang , Schandorf Ayirebi-Acquah and most importantly, Derrick Abotsi all members of the GA.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Madam Speaker, lol what pushed you to go further?

Vanessa: I’m already a GA member, a representative for my hall. So it was my Hall’s president who’s popularly known as Kross Montana and Kojo Baah of GRASAC to urged me on.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Wow. Then it’s like they really saw the leadership skills in you

Vanessa: oh Yes, we are cool like that and i’m glad they believed in me

Kuulpeeps Legon: What were your chances of winning?

Vanessa: Before that, let me tell you how I won that seat. So, it was Akua Busia of the Women’s Commissioner who elected me and was seconded by Kross Montana when both Hon. Ankrah and Hon. Kwaku Asante both declined the seat, which I humbly accepted it and Glory, be to God I was not opposed by the house.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Haahaaa!! So wait, does it change anything?

Vanessa: Yeah .Of course, History has been made!! I’m the first ever lady serving as a deputy speaker on this administration.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Let’s say if you had to give your seat to someone who would it be?

Vanessa: I would have definitely given it to any female GA member!

Kuulpeeps Legon: Eeeei honourable, you sound like a feminist.

Vanessa: Yes I am but my definition of feminism is giving equal rights to females as well.

Kuulpeeps Legon: We know SRC and JCR Presidents enjoy some privileges, what does your position offer? Does it have an effect on your GPA or standard of living?

Vanessa: lol!! No please it has nothing to do with our GPA. The only thing is know is that we are given funds apart from that, I don’t know of anything aside the funds.

Kuulpeeps Legon : Do you see ever aspire to be a politician?

Vanessa: I think I’m already one, hahaa!!! And yes I will enter into national politics.

Kuulpeeps Legon: So Vanessa, what do you have for us, I mean for those who want to venture into such leaderships.

Vanessa: For sure, always try to make a difference no matter how small it is, be cool, and know a lot of people and importantly Pray Hard.

Kuulpeeps Legon: Great chat, we enjoyed it and Congratulations. We need more women like you to encourage young ladies that everything is achievable.

Vanessa : Yes and Thank You. It was my pleasure to have you.
