“Chale them say some strike bi o”. This is the sound that flooded the ears of students of Takoradi Technical University past noon on 13th September, 2018.
Classes were cancelled with most students seen grinning ear to ear whiles few showed actual concern about the matter. To those asking what happening, here’s what’s happening. To those only concerned about the extra time, here’s how that came to be so lol.
Since the conversion of the Technical Universities from polytechnics to universities, there has been complaints made by the Technical Universities Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) about unfair treatment by the Ministry of Education.
Expectations by TUTAG has not been made into reality as the association has seen no changes in their conditions of services despite the conversion.
The TUTAG Council on several occasions has made appeals to the Ministry about migrating them onto the conditions of services for public universities but has seen no results.
To add more salt to the injury, representatives from Takoradi Technical University and other technical universities were left stranded at the for the office of the National Labour Commission after being summoning to a scheduled hearing on Wednesday 12th September, 2018 to deal with the matter.
TUTAG in a letter dated 12th September, 2018 expressed their outrage at the gross misconduct exhibited by the Commission as well as the unjust behavior towards them and declared an indefinite sit-down strike having followed the requirements of the labour laws of Ghana.
