#SMWAccra: If You Missed The Gig Economy Session, We Gathcu!

The Gig Economy was one of the topics for discussion at Social Media Week Accra today.

It was a session where speakers talked about how social media has helped them to get gigs.

DJ Vyrusky, Biishville, and Valerie Lawson were the speakers for the session

DJ Vyrusky was the first speaker.

He said in his presentation that social media is what helped him to be who he is now.

He talked about how he got popular through social media after he played at Epilogo. “That was where it all began for me, people tweeted about how well I rocked the crowd with good music”, he added.

Vyrusky also talked about how he got his radio job through a job pitch at Starr FM.

He adviced that it’s important to be very active on social media if your business depends on it because he lost a gig in South Africa which would have brought him big money just because he did not check a Facebook message.

He also talked about the importance of branding yourself well on social media because that is what pulls the brand towards you.

Vyrusky went on to say that he got to meet and work with Mayorkun and Dj Spinall, all because of social media.

He further stated how his following on social media gets him gigs.

The second presentation was given by Biishville.

He began with a description of his business. He described it as a pop-up restaurant based on African cuisine.

He explained that social media is important because it helps him advertise his business at a lower cost since he presently can’t afford a billboard.

He also said that social media helps him to know the demographics of his clients.

“Social media also helps increase the visibility of his business which results in me getting gigs.” He added.

Biishville further stated that through social media, he is able to reach customers faster and easier.

Valerie Lawson was the third speaker.

She talked about how social media helps make collaborations with other people who are into the same business easier.

Valerie re-echoed what Vyrusky said about how following on social media gets her gigs.

She spoke about understanding the market and studying the numbers and then bombarding them with your business ideas.

She further stated that 95% of marketing, strategy, branding of her business was done through social media. “Basically social media pushed my business” she added.

There are more interesting sessions to come.

Don’t miss out on any of them.
