In our quest to bridge the gap between the SRC and the student body, we brought you an exclusive, first, with the SRC President.
Now we bring you another exclusive with the SRC Secretary for Methodist University, Dansoman Campus.
We bet you didn’t even know these things about the SRC Secretary, scroll through and enjoy the conversation.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Briefly introduce yourself to us, please?
Src Secretary: Alberta Sam Katu is my name, a half Fante half Ga, I hail from Ajumako -Eduyaw in the Central Region of Ghana. I’m from a family of 3, the only girl and two brothers. Had my primary education at St. Luke’s Anglican JHS and proceeded to Pank Senior High school where I offered a programme in General Arts then after to Methodist University.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Okay so what course do you offer in MUCG? What’s your age and what level are you in?
SRC Secretary: Economics and statistics, I’m 20 years and at Level 400.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: The pet name ”Albie” seems to be better known than Alberta. How did the name come about?
SRC Secretary: Well surprisingly people don’t call me that. They call me Solicitor instead.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Oh yeah that too. Why Solicitor though?
SRC Secretary: Well I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer when I grow up so I chose that name which depicts that profession.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Meaning you’ll eventually pursue law someday? Why study economics and statistics then?
SRC Secretary: Yes I will pursue law after school. Economics and Statistics because I love economics and maths and I decided to do it as a first degree.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Fair enough. That works fine as well. To the real deal, why did you vie for this capacity?
SRC Secretary: My mum is a secretary and looking at the zeal with which she does her work I developed that passion for secretarial work and also, I’m currently working as an assistant secretary for my alma mater I found it as an opportunity to learn more.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: That’s interesting. What are your duties as Secretary?
SRC Secretary: Take minutes during general assembly meetings. Relay information from meetings to the student body. Keep administrative records of the SRC. Act as a link between the SRC and student body
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: So you act as a link between the administrative body of MUCG and the student body as well?
SRC Secretary: That is not a singular duty of mine but the SRC as a whole.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: What are your plans for the school? Especially for this semester?
SRC Secretary: Well before anything I’m hoping for the school to get more enrollments this semester so the student population can increase.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Rightly said, the numbers keep dwindling.
SRC Secretary: Well in relation to your question I would together with the other executive members make the school an interesting place for the students.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: How exactly would you make the school an interesting place for the students in your capacity?
SRC Secretary: I believe if the basic needs of the students are addressed and also they are made to feel involved in the SRC.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: They being the student body? How would you ensure their involvement in the SRC as a secretary?
SRC Secretary: Well I’ll corporate with class reps, association heads and committee heads to ensure that their members get involved
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Communication is very key in the execution of your duties. What other means apart from social media would you employ to facilitate the conveyance of information effectively between the SRC and student body?
SRC Secretary: I plan on using the general notice board and those in lecture halls.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: How would you enlighten the freshers who would not have a clue about all of this?
SRC Secretary: I plan on speaking to them during their orientation so I can get in touch with their class reps.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: We hope all your plans will definitely be carried out. Apart from your official duties of course, what would differently as Secretary that’ll make you a standout?
SRC Secretary: Well I would like to liaise with the IT association to update the school SRC website. Make a suggestion box in front of the SRC office where students can put their suggestions. Also to help students with secretarial work without a fee
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Whoosh! You go, girl!! Very applaudable!
SRC Secretary: *smiles*
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: The SRC office is almost inconspicuous. Some students are unaware of its location. How would you address that?
SRC Secretary: I believe if printed direction signs are made at vantage points giving directions to the office it will help address that.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Hmm… So would that be done as well?
SRC Secretary: We hadn’t thought of that earlier but thank you for bringing that up, we’ll work on that.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: What have you noticed or been told are very pressing needs in line with your duties and what would you do to solve them as quickly as possible?
SRC Secretary: Well, the fact that students don’t mostly read from the notices. Hmmm, I’m just hoping for the better in the coming semesters.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Indeed we all hope for better results but how would you make sure they read from notices?
SRC Secretary: I think I will still have to use the help of reps and heads to make the students under them aware that there is information on the notices for them I think that will help
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: What do you think has accounted for that lack of interest?
SRC Secretary: For that, I can’t really figure it out.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: What’s next for you after you’ve served your term?
SRC Secretary: National service yeah!
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Do you aspire to serve as Secretary on a bigger platform in addition to the law?
SRC Secretary: Yes, please. If I get the opportunity
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: We pray you to do the Secretary-general of the UN maybe?
SRC Secretary: I will be very glad
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Now we’re interested in knowing what or who inspires you?
SRC Secretary: My mother. She taught me most of the things I know about Secretarial stuff, she’s hardworking, supports me and very tolerant!!
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Aww…your mom must be proud of you!
SRC Secretary: Yeah yeah, She is!
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: And what are your interests as well?
SRC Secretary: Sewing, reading and watching movies.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Wow sewing? Then get ready cause we’ll be coming to you often lol.
SRC Secretary: Hahahaha. For now, I’m still learning to sew with the machine, but I do it with my hand most of the time.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Lol, Ah well, then you’d do some alterations.
SRC Secretary: You know right. I do that often.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Moving away, well who’s the lucky dude who has gotten himself “the solicitor”?
SRC Secretary: Lol by that I guess I’m being asked if I’m in a relationship. Yes, I am!
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Is he a student of MUCG? *one eye closed*
SRC Secretary: Lol I wouldn’t want to delve deep into that.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: lol, no worries. Just teasing…What are your final words?
SRC Secretary: First of all thank you for the interview and thank you to every student in MUCG, we hope to corporate with each one of them and work together for the betterment of the school. God bless you.
Kuulpeeps Methodist University: Amen. It’s been great getting to know you and your intentions for the school. I wish you nothing but the very best in all your endeavors. We’re grateful! Enjoy the rest of your day!
SRC Secretary: Thank you. Have a nice day too
