Pope Francis Champions The Reformation On The Use Of Death Penalty As Punishment For Certain Crimes

Pope Francis in recent past has opposed the teachings of the Catechism of the Church which state that the death penalty was an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.

According to the Pope, the teachings of the Catechism of the Church is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.

Reformations have however been made concerning this teaching; The new teaching states that there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. The new teaching also states that today’s more effective detention methods protect citizens and do not definitely deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.

The Universal Government of the Catholic Church says the church will now work with the determination for the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.
