The BBC Says That Reports Suggesting That It Has Distanced Itself From Anas Are Untrue

Anas Aremeyaw Anas

The BBC is setting records straight after various media houses reported that it has distanced itself from Anas Aremeyaw Anas following the Number 12 expose.

The local media reports suggested that the BBC claimed it did not sponsor the investigative work Anas did into corruption in football.

However, in a Twitter thread just hours ago… the BBC through its verified BBC Africa Twitter handle has said that “reports circulating in the media that #BBCAfricaEye is distancing itself from Anas Aremeyaw Anas are completely untrue. In fact, we are currently working with Anas on a new project.”

“When we produced our exclusive Africa Eye film, Betraying the Game, we made it perfectly clear from the outset that this was a documentary about his investigation,” another tweet in the thread said and that “Anas has himself confirmed this and agreed that our documentary would include questions about his methods as well as his extraordinary revelations, which were clearly overwhelmingly in the public interest to report.”

Now the BBC tweets fell short of confirming whether or not it sponsored the investigation.

Earlier assertions by Anas’s mentor, Kwaku Baako had implied that the BBC commissioned Anas to undertake the investigation – he has recently come out to apologise for miss representing the facts.

With this latest thread from the BBC, it is safe to assume that they were made aware of Anas’s investigation into African football after it had already commenced and the report the BBC commissioned was an attempt by them to report on Anas and his investigation into African football.

They might not have been involved from the beginning.

This will not go away anytime soon…
