Just follow carefully as we give you all the rundown on how to know your class with these calculations.

The Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) is the CGPA for all courses under consideration calculated up to the end of a student’s academic programme.

First, note these important things:

CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREES
The classification system for the four-year degree programme of the University of Ghana has been adopted as follows:

  • All end-of-semester examination results from Level 100, including University and
Faculty required courses shall be taken into account in the computation of the Final
Grade Point Averages (FGPAs) for the classification of the Bachelor’s degree.
  • The Grade Point Averages (GPAs) from Level 100 to 400 shall have equal weighting.
  • In the determination of the FGPA, a weighted average of all repeat courses shall be used

The full scheme of classification shall read as follows:

  • First Class – 3.60 – 4.00
  • Second Class (Upper Division) – 3.00 – 3.59
  • Second Class (Lower Division) – 2.00 – 2.99
  • Third Class – 1.50 – 1.99
  • Pass                       -1.00  – 1.49
  • Fail (No award) – 0.00 – 0.99

Now, each year carries a specific weight. A total of all the weights for the four years spent at Methodist University equals 6. Guess you’ve seen students using 6/6 when completing?! Yeah right, this is the ratio chart.

YEARRATIO
Level 1001/6
Level 2001/6
Level 3002/6
Level 4002/6

To help you calculate your FGPA, you need to multiply your GPA at the end of each year by their weights respectively.

Example: Level 100 = 3.65 x 1/6 = 0.61

Level 200 = 3.55 x 1/6 = 0.59

Level 300 = 3.52 x 2/6 = 1.17

Level 400 = 3.64 x 2/6 = 1.21

You add up each figure gotten for the levels as demonstrated :0.61 + 0.59 + 1.17 + 1.21 = 3.58

Therefore, the sum, 3.58 is the FGPA which translates into a second class upper.
