Every semester at UG ends with the excitement of returning home for a relaxing vacation from school work and lectures. This seems to be fun till the results start trickling in like that of an election.
Most people become saddled with how the GPA calculation is done and as such, tend to worry about how they arrived at their various GPAs at a point in time.
Trying to calculate your GPA on your own can sometimes be stressful… but don’t worry. Here’s an even easier way to calculate your GPA without too much wahala.

We’re going to find out the meanings of each terminology on the UG transcript while trying to learn how to calculate them as we go on. This is going to be fun!
First, we have the cumulative credits taken (CCT). This is basically the number of courses you took in a semester multiplied by their respective credit hours. For example, if I took five courses in a semester and each was worth three credit hours, my CCT would be calculated as:
5 x 3 = 15
So in that semester, all my courses will be worth 15 credit hours.
Next, to calculate your GPA, you need to know the points you earn for each grade. Here is a chart to guide you.

Now that we know these, we can go ahead and calculate our GPA.
In calculating your GPA, you’ll need to add the points for each of the grades you got and divide the answer by your CCT.
For instance, you took five courses, each worth three credit hours and had three As a B+ and a C. your GPA will be calculated as
Total Grade Point (TGP) = A + A + A + B+ + C
= 12 + 12 + 12 + 10.5 + 6
= 52.6
Therefore GPA= TGP/ CCT
= 52.6/ 15
= 3.51
The next thing is to calculate your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). This is an addition of all the points you got for each course, divided by the total number of credit hours for each of the courses you took while studying at UG…. Easy right?
Finally, the boss itself…. The Final Grade Point Average (FGPA). This is what determines the class you’ll get at the end of your studies at UG.
You should pay rapt attention because this can be a little confusing.
Now, each year carries a specific weight. A sum of all the weights of all the four years at UG equals 6. Here is the chart

| Level 300 | 2/6 |
| Level 400 | 2/6 |
So in calculating your FGPA, you’ll need to multiply your GPA at the end of each year by their respective weights.
Example: Level 100 = 3.65 x 1/6 = 0.61
Level 200 = 3.55 x 1/6 = 0.59
Level 300 = 3.52 x 2/6 = 1.17
Level 400 = 3.64 x 2/6 = 1.21
These are then summed up: 0.61 + 0.59 + 1.17 + 1.21 = 3.58
Therefore, the person’s FGPA will be 3.58 which translates into a second class upper.
DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
- First Class – 3.60 – 4.00
- Second Class (Upper Division) – 3.00 – 3.59
- Second Class (Lower Division) – 2.00 – 2.99
- Third Class – 1.50 – 1.99
- Pass -1.00 – 1.49
- Fail (No award) – 0.00 – 0.99
